Come and enjoy the Wild & Scenic Delaware River with Pocono Heritage Land Trust volunteers on a two-day paddling experience in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area! Our overnight trip will be Saturday & Sunday, July 28 & 29.

We will meet at Chamberlain Canoes in Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania, at 9am on Saturday for check-in. We put in upriver at Dingman’s Ferry and paddle about 4-5 hours to our overnight spot, Rivers Bend Group Campground, a primitive campsite with compost toilets and potable water (no showers or running water, hand pump only). Would you like to learn about birds and other wildlife frequenting the Delaware? If so, you can join a group of paddlers following local naturalist Don Miller down the river.

Once we arrive at the River’s Bend campsite, we set up our tents and then enjoy a gourmet dinner provided by Ace’s Catering. Later we will listen to a guitarist while sitting around a campfire. Then after a sleep and a light breakfast Sunday morning, we continue downriver to the take-out points. You choose where to end Sunday’s paddle – either the Smithfield Beach access (~2-3 hours from Rivers Bend) or the Kittatinny Point (~4-5 hours from Rivers Bend). Vans from Chamberlain’s Canoes will arrive periodically to ferry paddlers and equipment back to the canoe rental office where you parked your car.

Prices are per person and include dinner Saturday, a light breakfast Sunday, outfitter fees, music, and camping charge: $195 per person for a kayak or canoe, or portage of your craft. If interested, respond by email to or text/call (570) 269-9960 to hold your spot - the trip will be limited to 40 people. Please include your name, your partner’s name (if no partner, we will match up singles), cell phone & email info for all those in your group, and what type of water craft you would like. Full payment is due by Friday June 22nd.

Checks should be made to "Pocono Heritage Land Trust" and mailed to: Pocono Heritage Land Trust, Post Office Box 553, Pocono Pines, PA  18350, or RSVP & pay by PayPal below...Thank you for your support!!! The funds received will be going towards scholarships to high school seniors pursuing environmental careers!

Here are other details regarding the possibility of trip cancellation, camping arrangements, equipment, terrain, and things to avoid:

  • An information packet including full itinerary and complete details will be sent to you in early July.

  • If the trip is cancelled due to a forecast of heavy rain or hazardous river conditions, you will receive a full refund of your payment for the trip. The rain date will be August 25/26, 2018.

  • No one under the age of 16 will be allowed to participate in the trip.

  • Life jackets must be worn at all times while paddling (or swimming) on the Delaware River.

  • You can choose to either take advantage of our tent rental and set-up service or bring your own tent.  Tent rental and set-up is an extra $20.

  • In addition to your tent, you will want to bring other camp gear such as a sleeping bag, pillow, and a folding chair, and a lantern and/or flashlight. Your gear will be transported to the camping site by PHLT volunteers. On Sunday morning, you will pack all the gear you don’t need for Sunday’s paddle and load it into the van for transport back to Chamberlain’s Canoes.

  • Don’t own a sleeping bag? We have a limited number of sleeping bags/mats/pillows for rent for an extra $10 fee.

  • There will be walking on uneven surfaces and a steep hill to climb up to the campsite. The forest that leads from the riverbank to the River’s Bend campsite contains poison ivy which grows up to the edge of the trail. It’s possible to walk the trail without touching the poison ivy if you are careful.

  • Please be aware you will need to finish out the paddle on Sunday to return your craft to Chamberlain Canoes.

  • This is a fantastic trip! It is a great way to enjoy the beautiful Delaware River we have here in our own backyard and an opportunity to get together and have fun with others in the community. Be ready for two full days of physical activity, which may include swimming (if you wish) and sustained periods of paddling.

  • Cancellation policies: in the event that you decide to cancel your trip reservation, you will receive a partial refund based upon the following criteria: up to fourteen days before the trip begins, cancellation results in a refund of your trip payment less a $20 cancellation fee; up to seven days before the trip begins, cancellation results in a refund of your trip payment less a $40 cancellation fee; up to 24 hours before the trip, cancellation results in a refund of your trip payment less a $60 cancellation fee; cancelling your reservation within 24 hours of the trip’s beginning results in a refund of your trip payment less a $70 cancellation fee.

  • Pocono Heritage Land Trust reserves the right to cancel the trip for any unforeseen reason. However, hazardous conditions on the Delaware River or a forecast of heavy rain are the most likely reasons for a trip cancellation. One hundred percent of the amount paid to Pocono Heritage Land Trust will be refunded in such circumstances.

  • ***Pre-registration is REQUIRED for this event as we will need a minimum of 20 people to sign up in order to hold the event.   To pre-register, please CALL  Mary Ellen Higgins at or (570) 269-9960 if you have questions.
